St. Anthony of Padua

Volume XXXVII Number 31

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

August 1, 2010

God, come to my help. Lord, quickly give me assistance. You are the one who helps me and sets me free: Lord, do not be long in coming.

Gospel

 Reflection

The Lord hands down the sternest warning to those who would store up treasure for themselves but who “are not rich in what matters to God.” What does matter to God? Qoheleth readily recognizes the vanity of laboring, toiling, and acquiring. Sorrow, grief, and restlessness persist, nonetheless, in plaguing such a person. What matters to God is that, through baptism, we have died and our life is hidden with Christ in God. Life’s richness consists in seeking the One who is above and claiming the new self offered to us through him. Christ is all. Our treasure lies in claiming Christ our life who has appeared.              Magnificat 2010

“LET US PRAY TO THE LORD”

Please remember in your prayers this week to pray for the sick of the parish, those who are in the hospital: the souls in Purgatory; the poor and suffering in the world; the special intentions in our Mass book; and Vocations to the Priesthood, diaconate and Religious Life. May all those in need, whether of soul, body or mind, find in us a CHRIST-LIKE response to their need.

Please call the parish office at 872-0922 if you or someone in your family is in the hospital. The hospitals no longer call the churches.

INTENTIONS OF THE HOLY FATHER

August

*The Unemployed and the Homeless

General – That those who are without work or homes or who are otherwise in serious need may find understanding and welcome, as well as concrete help in overcoming their difficulties.

*Victims of Discrimination, Hunger and Forced Emigration

Missionary – That the Church may be a “home” for all people, ready to open its doors to any who are suffering from racial or religious discrimination, hunger, or wars forcing them to immigrate to other countries. .

STEWARDSHIP EXPRESSIONS:

August – Courtesy and sharing portray respect for others and help people to live and interact compatibly. The end of summer marks another time of change, with schedules filling and time commitments increasing. We begin another school year and renew work efforts with fresh opportunities to show basic respect and manners toward others. Let our spirit and expressions serve as guiding lights for others.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.             Heb 12:11

ASSUMPTION OF OUR LADY NOVENA

Novena Dates August 6 – 14

Feast Day August 15

Majestic Queen of Heaven and Mistress of the Angels, you received from God the power and command to crush the head of Satan. Therefore, we humbly beg of you, send forth the legions of Heaven that under your command they may seek out all evil spirits, engage them everywhere in battle, curb their pride, and hurl them back into the pit of hell. “Who is like unto God?”

With firm confidence we present ourselves before you, our most loving Mother, afflicted and troubled as we are, and we beg you to let us understand the love you have for us by granting this petition: (mention your request).

Good and tender Mother, you shall ever be our hope and the object of our love. Mother of God, send forth the Holy Angels to defend us and drive far from us the cruel foe. Holy angels and Archangels defend and keep us. (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)
